It all began in 2008 when my parents were selling their apartment in New York and decided to have it professionally photographed. A few days after the shoot I saw the photos and was completely blown away. I'd never seen anything like it before! The apartment was beautiful, but the way it looked in the photos was extraordinary. I remember being amazed at how sharp they looked and how vibrant the colors were. I was drawn to the photos. I couldn't stop staring at them. Looking back, I can say this was the moment I realized that architectural photography was what I wanted to do.
I studied at the International Center of Photography, worked under some amazing mentors, and started shooting apartments for real estate agents. During those early years I would sometimes shoot six apartments a day, working seven days a week, shooting and editing. This was my "boot camp".
My husband, Brian, joined me in 2011 to take on marketing and business development. As our business grew and projects got bigger, I often found myself working late into the night with barely a break in sight. Perhaps it was sympathy or perhaps curiosity, but soon Brian was asking me to teach him how to edit in my style so he could help with the workload. Thus began Brian's journey into the creative side of photography.
Brian learned the editing process quickly and was soon asking me to take him on photo shoots to learn the photography process. He was as much a perfectionist as I was, and I loved helping him develop as an architectural photographer. I appreciated that he understood my vision and learned to shoot in my style, but I also grew to love his unique angles and ability to make spaces feel intimate.
Brian and I are a team at work and at home. Our shoots are a collaborative experience with our clients where they have the opportunity to preview and create every composition alongside us. Our iPad connects wirelessly to our camera, allowing us to walk around the space together making adjustments while viewing the shot in real-time.
We now have a baby boy named Liam, our "assistant in training". The team is growing, not just with Liam, but also with our in-house editors, Emily and Holland.
Our business is our passion. Our team is more family than co-worker. Our clients are more our friends than just colleagues, and the relationships we seek to create mean more to us than any single job.
Working with Donna Dotan Photography means making an investment in each other, so that the final product is as beautiful as the world we live in.
We look forward to bringing you into the family!
